China's Sinopec, biodiesel firms to develop bio-bunkers

Shanghai, 10 July (Argus)- chinese state-owned sinopec's subsidiaryQingdao New Energyhas signed strategicagreements with 10 leading Chinese biodiesel firms to jointly develop low-carbon marine fuels.

This initiative was launched in June, and marks a key step in the company's efforts to support the National EnergyAdministration's biodiesel pilot program. Sinopec is one of the 22 companies selected for the program.

Sinopec signed agreements with biodiesel enterprises located in north, east, and south China, regions that alignclosely with the coastal domestic trade and bonded ship refueling service areas managed by Qingdao NewEnergy.These companies have a combined 2.75 mn t/yr of production capacity, and account for 69pc of totalChinese biodiesel production capacity.

The agreements involve the 10 biodiesel producers supplying biodiesel for marine fuel blending, which sinopecwil purchase to meet domestic and international demand. sinopec will supply methanol to the biodiesel plantswith methanol being a required input in the production process. Further details, such as the timeline andvolumes, were not disclosed.

This initiative represents a tangible advancement in China's commitment to reducing carbon emissions andfostering green development, according to the Biodiesel lndustry lnnovation Consortium's (BllC) chief scientist.Xing ji. BllC is a consortium of 19 key Chinese biodiesel producers and exporters that aims to establishcommunications between the Chinese industry and the European Commission.

Xing called for a further expansion of collaboration between central and local state-owned enterprises within thebiodiesel sector to deyelop a robust domestic biodiesel market., He also encouraged other state-owned companiesto broaden their co-operation with the biodiesel industry, to let the EU and Us have a better understanding of thecurrent status of china's biodiesel industry and correct their misconceptions about china's biodiesel usage and exports.
